Day #12 – Getting Organized Challenge

Today’s challenge is the spice cabinet.  Yay!  Finally one where I feel marginally confident – at least in part.  Shortly after we got married, I bought two chalkboard magnetic panels from Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel.  Then I put all our spices in magnetic spice canisters from Custom Magnetic Spice Racks

Pretty nice, eh? (Sorry, I’m from Michigan and the Yooper influence is a bit much at times).  Except for the out of control photos and birth announcements at the top.  All the spices are labeled, and the more frequently used or higher volume spices are in the larger square containers.

Much tidier after.  I limited the notices to Arden’s birth announcement, and those for babies born within the last 12 months.  I wasn’t expecting how dusty and gross the tops of the uppermost row of spice containers were.
But, I have to also share the cabinet with additional spices and baking goods if I’m going to be completely forthcoming.

This is part of a cabinet unit that appears to be original to the house – there’s a flour bin with a sifter on the other side.  So, these cabinets are a bit shallow and clunky, with little braces in the corner and a half shelf that hardly anything fits under.  After taking everything out, I was really grossed out at how crumb-y and sticky the bottoms of the cabinet were.

I weeded out duplicates and expired stuff, and tried to put things into containers.  These are temporary – I took measurements of the cabinet so I can get ones that fit a little better, but they’ll do for now.
