Arden’s Dance Party

When we were trying to decide on a theme for Arden’s 2nd birthday party, we wanted it to be something that was meaningful to her.  Arden loves to dance whenever there’s music playing (and frequently when there’s not!), and the iPad commercial music never fails to get her bouncing to the beat!  So, it quickly became clear that a dance party for a two year old was what would be meaningful to her.

I printed out the invitations on bright colored paper and glued them to rounds of black textured paper to look like a label on a record.

For Arden’s outfit, I wanted to make her a shirt that looked like the Fame logo, but with her name.  I tried finding a font that I could use, but there wasn’t anything that really resembled this design – likely the work of a graphic artist specifically for the show.  So, I put my meager artistic abilities to the test and drew my own logo using the Fame design as a guide.  The sketch on the right is a first version – I changed it a little bit for the final version.  Then I used freezer paper stenciling and silver soft Tulip fabric paint to put the design on a pink shirt.  I think it turned out really cute!

Arden really got into the action of the party – busting out her best dance moves right away!  We played Barenaked Ladies’ Snacktime CD – one of our favorites for our impromptu dance parties!  She wore a cute tutu over her jeans to complete the dancer look for part of the party – a last-year Christmas gift from Aunt Jean and Uncle Matthew.

I tried to keep the food simple and kid-friendly and also keep the theme in mind.  We had “Disco” Cake Balls (recipe from Bakerella), a Fruit & Yogurt Parfait “Barre”, Ham & Monterey Jack/Turkey & Cheddar / Peanut Butter & Jelly “Twirls”, and of course cake.  I had to sneek Rock n’ Rye pop into the beverage mix to fit the theme, but we also served water, Fresca, and Capri Sun Roaring Waters.

We had four two year olds or thereabouts that attended, and I think it went over pretty well.  Arden really seemed to enjoy the party with only a couple of mini-meltdowns.  She was very gracious – signing and saying Thank-You to her guests and giving nice hugs as they departed.

I’ll be linking up the “Fame” name shirt idea to the parties in my linky party directory and to:

How fun! I never would have thought to do that for a two year old! I am stuck on the having some sort of cartoon character. Any of my kids would have loved this! They love to dance. I did make Ian a mixed CD of all his favorite songs on his second birthday to play while the party was going on. We usually just fill up the kiddie pools since Ian & Breyden’s b-day’s are in the summer and its crazy hot, but I always struggle with fun stuff for Sophie because she’s a New Year’s Baby and it’s usually cold and rainy. This would have been the perfect thing! I’ll have to remember it for next year!
