The Collector’s Bag

There were a couple of unscathed pockets left in what remained of Dave’s cargo shorts, AND I couldn’t just send my nephew Alex a nifty vest for his rock collecting tendencies – he needed a little bag in case his pockets overflowed!
This time, I didn’t bother with picking the pocets off, I just hacked a rectangle out which included the pocket plus some seam allowance, cut another plain piece from the leg and then matching pieces from my linen capris for the bag lining.  A length of the leaf-colored fabric about 3.5′ wide and from selvage to selvage would become straps.
Stitch each set of rectangles together along three sides.  Sew the straps along the long side; turn, press and topstitch along each edge.  With right sides facing, tuck the outer bag into the lining bag.  Pin around the top edge, and stuff the handles in so the raw edges line up at the top.  Sew around the top edge, leaving about 3″ open for turning.  Turn, press and topstitch.  Ta-da!

I seasoned the bag for rock collecting with a few that I’ve gathered over the years: a hunk of sandstone from Sedona, some granite from Pictured Rocks, a petoskey stone, and even a piece of The Rock.

I hope he loves it!
