easy e-reader sleeve

My thing for wool felt is becoming well known.  To the point that now I have friends who come to me saying “I’ve got a pile of wool/cashmere sweaters that don’t fit well – can you use them?”.  And my answer is “YES!”.

My friend and sorority little sister Kim did just that recently with one request – that she’d like something made out of a sweater which was a gift she received from her husband on their first Christmas.  She’s an avid reader and recently got a Nook, so we give you the easy e-reader sleeve.

First, I didn’t have continuous access to her Nook, so when I was visiting recently we traced the outline and the depth onto a sheet of paper.

At home, I gathered up the supplies including the sweater I had fulled.  I had some fine-whale corduroy leftover from a recent project and also grabbed some fusible fleece from my stash to pad it a little more.

I used my sewing machine to embroider read. on the bottom of the outer fabric.  You could skip this, or hand embroider something, or even freezer paper stencil.  The sky’s the limit – go crazy.

Then I cut my pieces.  My cuts were 6 3/4″ x 9 1/8″ using a 3/8″ seam allowance.  I think this is the Nook HD, you’d have to measure your device to calculate your cuts if it’s a different one.  I cut the fusible fleece 3/8″ smaller all around so it would not be included in the stitching.

Fuse the fleece to the backside of the outer fabric.  Then sandwich the outer fabric and the lining fabric with right sides facing.  Pin and sew leaving openings for turning.  I like to put double pins where I want the opening as a reminder to stop sewing.

Trim the seam allowances except along where the opening is.  Turn and pin the opening with the raw edges tucked in.  Topstitch about 1/8″ from the edge all the way around.

Take your two pieces and pin them together.  Following closely along the topstitching, sew along three sides leaving the top of the sleeve open.

Dave has a Nook, but it’s an older model so the dimensions are different, but it’s almost as wide so I checked the fit using his.  Should be good!

All nice and snuggly.  Maybe this should be called an e-reader cozy instead of a sleeve?

The backside of the paper we used for the Nook dimensions has the outline of her iPad so I’m hoping to show you another version with a different method in a few days.  Optimistic to the end, that’s me!
