Kids Clothes Week: Day 2 РTutorial for Pattern Matching With a Matin̩e Dress

If you read my plans for KCW, you saw that I was planning to pretest my Matinée Dress using some great Michael Miller fabric.

Happily, I’m not pretesting my Matinée Dress; it’s in testing right now – and they’re killing it!  I’m fulfilling my plans and making a dress with the fabric.  It is turning out soooo cute!

As I was working on it last night during my hour of sewing, I wanted to try to pattern match the one side seam where the back of the boat was cut off.  So I took a few pics and shared them on Instagram (I’m @jennuinedesign) to show how to pattern match; or at least how I do it:

Start by cutting the first pattern piece.  Lay it on top of the fabric aligning everything perfectly to match the pattern.

Line up a clear ruler with twice the seam allowance along the seam of the first piece.  I’m using 3/8″ SA, so this is 3/4″.

Pattern matching across a seam

Then lay your next pattern piece on top of the ruler aligned on the left edge, and slide the first piece of fabric out of the way.  Then carefully slide the ruler out while keeping the pattern piece in place.  Cut the pattern piece out and sew!

Ta-da!!!  Perfectly matched!

Arden wandered downstairs at almost midnight wanting a drink of water so I tried the bodice on her – hooray!  It fits!

I should be able to finish this dress during tonight’s hour of sewing and maybe get some pics of Arden in it by Wednesday.
