Simple Sewing :: Necktie Wine Tote

Eeek!  Guess what!?  My work has been published in a magazine!!  Sew-it… today was looking for projects using men’s ties, and I threw my Necktie Wine Tote project I had created as a guest post on The Girl Creative into the hat, and they chose to publish it with a great collection of other inspiring projects!
So I figured it was about time to bring this post home.  This is such a great and easy project with big impact with minimal effort.

I’m going to share a super quick project perfect for evenings on the front porch with friends or an afternoon BBQ.  This Necktie Wine Tote is made from two ties.  Three seams on your sewing machine and it’s done – how easy is that?  You could even hand sew this if you don’t have access to a machine.

My husband gave me a bag full of ties he was no longer wearing a couple of months ago.  Some had been handed down to him from his father and some were his.  There were some real gems in there, let me tell you!  I chose two ties which complemented each other and got to work:
What you’ll need:  two ties, a sewing machine and thread (or thread and hand sewing needle), pins, and a bottle of wine (yay!).
1.  Using your bottle as a guide to where to fold the ties, fold each tie in half with the front/right side together.
2.  Pin in place (I made sure to match the pattern on the one on the left) and sew pretty close to the edge.  I used contrasting thread to show the stitching, but you’ll want to use coordinating thread.
3.  Here’s the only tricky part:  Turn one of the ties right side out and slide it into the other tie with right sides facing.  Carefully pin making sure the fold at the bottom lines up.  Sew about 1/8″ from the edge.
4.  Turn the tote right side out and tie a knot in the tie ends to make a handle.

Whew!  That was all of ten minutes – now I’m off to enjoy some wine!

    Hello Jen,

I know it’s been a while since you posted this, but I would love to have your help on this one.
I’m form the Netherlands and stumbled on this one on Pinterst.
My English is not that bad, but the discription of how to make this one is a little bit of abracadabra.
    I’ve tried it, but sorry…nope, didn’t succeed.
Now my question to you is: can you send me a discription plus more photo’s of how to make this one?
My sewingskills and termanology about sewing is like trying to walk for the first time, but I so much would love to give this one a try.
If anyone else reads this and would love to help me out, please send me a message via email.
    My emaiadress is: b.postma01@gmail.com

Thanks in advance for helping me out!
