Video Tutorial :: Sewing a Fully Lined Bodice With No Closures

So folks, you know I love creating illustrations for my patterns.  I like that I can make portions transparent to show what’s happening underneath, that there’s no worry about the fabrics being confusing, and that I can make design changes without having to sew and photograph all over (flip-flopped pony ears, anyone?)

All that’s well and good, but there are just some techniques that are easiest to show in real time.  The pattern I’m currently working on is a fully lined bodice, but has no closures.  I’ve often seen this type of bodice finished with some hand sewing or by turning under the edges and topstitching.  But wait…  If the shoulder seam is wide enough, there’s a fun little technique that’s quick and easy – just watch!

Pretty slick, right?

I’m hoping to have the Verona Dress ready to start selecting testers in the next few days!

*Edited to add: The Verona Dress pattern is complete and available in my shop: Verona Dress, Tiny Verona Dress newborn size excerpt, and the Doll Verona Dress.

Oh. Wow. That is so cool!! I hadn’t seen that trick before, but I’ll be doing this from here on out. I’ve got a Craft Gossip post scheduled for this evening that links to your tutorial:

Oh my goodness – this just changed my life! I love sewing dresses for my daughter and the sleeveless ones (like this) are always such a bother. NOT ANYMORE – THANK YOU!!!

    Awesome!

Just like the hot dog pillowcase technique used in FACS class only a different application….

I’ve never seen a bodice that is done without any closures… I should find one. I don’t care for zippers too much.

Thank you for this post! My daughter loves jumper dresses, but I have never been able to figure out how to do a lined bodice. Just one question, would this work on a completely round neckline? I don’t need the collar.

Absolutely this will work on a round neckline. Best wishes!
