Tangle

Arden, Hadley, and I were able to enjoy a really cool and unusual experience last month.  My hometown has an active arts community and each year hosts an arts festival.  One of the events was Tangle, put on by Polyglot Theatre.  Polyglot is an Australian touring troupe and has other interactive programs.  I love their motto – “theatre is child’s play”.

From their website: Tangle is a huge, fun, totally interactive elastic weaving event, created live and on the spot by children and their families. It’s part spectacular live art, part performance, part playground and all chaos.

It was held in the parking lot of our community arts center.  We waited in line for our session to begin.  Both girls were sporting their new Camper Hats.  I was able to make this outing serve double duty and captured most of the modeled shots of the hats here.

The performers came around and handed everyone a ball of elastic – it was essentially fold over elastic.  Hmmm, maybe we could do this on a small scale at home?

Then the kids were set loose on the infrastructure of poles set up on platforms.

I wasn’t sure they were going to get into it at first – especially Hadley, but quickly a web began taking shape and they got more and more excited about it.  You can see the performer in blue in the background; he was mixing and playing music live along with the event.

There were other performers helping to show how the network of elastic could be used for play; they began pulling sections down and letting the kids bounce or lay on parts.

Arden loved when I pushed her up to the top and let her lay on it like a hammock!

You can see the whole tangle of the elastic – this was built up over the sessions throughout the day.

At the end of the session, the performers and participants would push the tangle up above head height to prepare for the next group.

I tried to find a schedule for more events in the US, but all I could find was a contact for booking if you’d like to bring Polyglot Theatre and Tangle to your town.  I can highly recommend it – we had more fun in half an hour than I can ever recall!

That looks like so much fun! I’d sure hate to be the person who gets to untangle it all though!
