Kids Clothes Week: Days 1 – 4

Recently, I received a custom request on Etsy for two rainbow dresses.  I don’t have these listed, but the client had found a picture of the dress I made for Arden’s 4th birthday and wanted one in size 3T and another in size 3-6 month.

Here is the original Rainbow Birthday Dress.

So I set to work making the dresses.  I already had the 3T basically drafted except to make it a little longer; the one I made Arden was quickly outgrown and it is now Hadley’s little dress.  The 3-6 month required an entirely new dress being drafted.  I used my friend Lauren’s handy dandy standard size guides and I feel confident that this should be appropriately sized for a baby that size.

Hadley, who at two is the size of a healthy three year old, volunteered to model the 3T for me.  I’m happy with the longer length; my client shouldn’t be left wondering if tights are enough coverage for her daughter.

You’ll notice that I didn’t piece the back.  That was intentional to be able to offer the dresses at a price point that worked with the recipients’ budget.  Piecing and matching all those curved seams across a zip is pretty time-consuming, so making the back solid cut a big chunk of that out.

I finished the hem of the main dress and the lining separately for the 3T, but I pressed under both and stitched the 3-6 month together so there should be less shifting of the dress on a baby who’s not yet sitting up on her own, and certainly not standing.  I also made the smaller one a little wider and less a-line; that proportion just seemed right for a smaller child.

“Check out the rainbow on my tummy!”

It seemed appropriate to take the photos in Arden’s room where the originals were.  It’s also the only spot in our home that is currently getting enough light to take reasonable photos.  I’ve scoped out all the best locations within our home to take photos.  This one is not the best one, but it gets the most light on dim overcast winter days like we’ve been getting.

Yeah, definitely needed to be a little longer. Hadley got it pretty quickly when Arden refused to wear leggings with it.

I’m new to your site–can you tell me what your etsy store is or how I might find out the price for a custom order of this dress?
