I Donated My Hair to Children With Hair Loss

I like having long hair, but every so often it gets a little out of control and I decide to cut it.  And while I’m cutting it I figure why not go just a little bit shorter and donate it to a good cause?

This was me (and my hair) earlier this summer.  I was already contemplating a donation at this point.

… and this was me last week capturing my 10″ donation on Instagram (@jennuinelife).  Too bad it wasn’t the only part of me which received a trim that day

There are several programs which take hair donations, but I’d like to share why I like to donate to Children With Hair Loss:

  • The recipients of hair donations are children.  Children with hair loss due to cancer, Alopecia, burns, Trichotillomania, and other rare diseases and disorders.
  • Hair replacements from Children With Hair Loss (CWHL) are provided to children at no cost to the family.  Not all programs are free to the families.
  • CWHL provides hair pieces or wigs.  Because of this, they are able to accept hair that is colored or gray as they don’t have to have enough untreated hair to make a complete wig.
  • Donations of 8″ or longer are accepted.  Again, because they make hair pieces they can make use of shorter lengths.
If you’re considering donating your hair, I recommend checking into the organization before you do.  You might find that you disagree with some of the practices such as charging clients for hair, or selling hair to fund the organization.
